Aarhus's coat of arms shows a blue shield with a red portal flanked by two red towers with spires. Two robed saints stand in the gateway, with a golden moon and star above. Below, wavy silver lines represent the harbour. The design dates to the 1250s.
Aarhus was founded by Vikings in the 8th century, and the city's original name, Aros, means 'river mouth' in Old Norse.
