The flag of Gibraltar is an elongated banner of the city's coat of arms: the upper two-thirds are white with a red three-towered castle, and the lower third is red with a gold key hanging from the castle gate. The castle and key were granted by Queen Isabella of Spain in 1502.

The key on Gibraltar's flag symbolises Gibraltar's strategic position as the 'Key to the Mediterranean', controlling access between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.
