Odense's coat of arms features Saint Knud (King Canute) as the central figure, who was martyred and buried in the local church. A fleur-de-lis also appears, taken from the city's oldest known seal. The design dates from around 1400.
Odense is the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, and the city's name bridges pagan and Christian history, originally named after the Norse god Odin.
