Silkeborg's coat of arms features a medieval castle that belonged to the bishops of Aarhus. According to legend, the castle was founded where Bishop Peter's silk hat washed ashore after being blown off while crossing the lake — hence the name 'Silkeborg'. Granted by royal decree in 1900.
Silkeborg Museum houses the Tollund Man, one of the world's best-preserved Iron Age bog bodies, dating to approximately 400 BC.
Adopted: 1900
