Sønderborg's coat of arms depicts Sønderborg Castle with its original three gates. The design is based on a seal known from 1644, though the arms may be older. The present colours were officially established in 1921.
Sønderborg Castle was used as a prison for the deposed King Christian II, who was held there for 17 years in the 16th century.
Adopted: 1644
