Adopted in 1860, the flag shares the yellow-blue-red tricolor design of Colombia and Venezuela, originating from the flag of Gran Colombia. Ecuador's version features the national coat of arms in the center, depicting Mount Chimborazo and a condor.
Ecuador's coat of arms on the flag features Mount Chimborazo, which due to Earth's equatorial bulge, has its summit as the farthest point from the center of the Earth.
