south americahorizontal tricoloryellow blue redMiranda tricolor

Adopted in 1861, the flag features three horizontal stripes with the yellow stripe occupying the top half, and the blue and red stripes each occupying a quarter. The design originates from Francisco de Miranda's vision for a liberated South America. Yellow represents sovereignty, blue the seas, and red the blood of heroes.

Francisco de Miranda, who designed the original tricolor, claimed the colors were inspired by a conversation with Goethe about the theory of primary colors.
