Adopted in 2006 in its current form, the flag features three equal horizontal stripes of yellow, blue, and red, with an arc of eight white stars on the blue stripe. The tricolor traces back to Francisco de Miranda and the liberation movement of Gran Colombia.
The eighth star was added in 2006 by President Hugo Chávez to honor Simón BolÃvar's decree and represents the province of Guayana, which had been excluded from earlier designs.
