Estonia

europetricolourhorizontal-stripes

The Estonian flag is a horizontal tricolour of blue, black, and white. The blue symbolizes the sky, sea, and loyalty; the black represents the dark past of oppression and the soil of the homeland; and the white stands for the aspiration toward enlightenment and virtue. The flag was first adopted by Estonian students in 1884.

During the Soviet occupation, displaying the Estonian flag was punishable by imprisonment, so Estonians kept hidden flags to preserve their national identity.
