europetricolourhorizontal-stripes

The Hungarian flag is a horizontal tricolour of red, white, and green. The red symbolizes strength, the white represents faithfulness, and the green stands for hope. The tricolour was first used during the 1848 revolution against Habsburg rule and became the national flag after Hungary gained independence.

During the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, citizens cut the communist coat of arms out of the center of the flag, leaving a hole that became a symbol of resistance.
