The Senyera, the flag of Catalonia, consists of four red stripes on a golden-yellow field. It is one of the oldest flags in continuous use in Europe, with origins dating to the 12th century County of Barcelona. Legend attributes the design to the Frankish Emperor Charles the Bald drawing four bloody fingers across a golden shield of Wilfred the Hairy.

According to legend, the four red stripes were created when King Charles the Bald dipped his fingers in the blood of the wounded Count Wilfred the Hairy and drew them across his golden shield.
