The ASEAN flag features a red circle on a blue background, within which ten golden rice stalks are bundled together. The blue represents peace and stability, the red stands for courage and dynamism, and the white represents purity. The ten rice stalks symbolise the ten member nations bound together in friendship and solidarity.
Rice was chosen as the central symbol because it is the staple crop of Southeast Asia and represents the agricultural heritage shared by all ten member states.
