Berry
The flag of Berry bears three golden fleurs-de-lis on a blue field with a distinctive red bordure engrailed โ a wavy or scalloped red border surrounding the entire shield. Like Artois, Berry's arms derive from the French royal arms with a difference mark, in this case the engrailed red border indicating another apanage of the crown. The province was granted as the Duchy of Berry to various French princes, most notably Jean de Berry, the famous patron of the Trรจs Riches Heures illuminated manuscript. Centered on Bourges โ once a rival to Paris as capital of France โ Berry sits at the geographic heart of the country.
Bourges, the capital of Berry, was briefly the effective capital of France in the early 15th century when Paris was occupied by the English โ Charles VII was mockingly called 'the King of Bourges.'
