Valle d'Aosta
The flag of Valle d'Aosta (Vallรฉe d'Aoste) is a vertical bicolor of black and red, a design with roots in the medieval heraldry of the region. These colors derive from the coat of arms of the ancient Lords of Challant, one of the most powerful feudal families in the Aosta Valley. As Italy's smallest and least populous region, Valle d'Aosta holds autonomous status and is officially bilingual in Italian and French. The stark black-and-red combination makes it one of the most distinctive and easily identifiable regional flags in Italy.
Valle d'Aosta is home to both the Italian side of Mont Blanc (Monte Bianco) and the Matterhorn (Cervino), and its autonomous status guarantees French as a co-official language โ the only region in Italy where French has official status.
