Fribourg

cantonsbicolorblackwhite

The flag of Fribourg is vertically divided into black (left) and white (right) halves. This stark bicolor design dates to the 14th century when the city was founded by the Dukes of Zähringen. The black and white colors are believed to derive from the Zähringen family heraldry and have remained unchanged for over 600 years, making it one of the most enduring cantonal designs.

Fribourg straddles the French-German language border (Röstigraben), and its capital city is officially bilingual — the only such cantonal capital in Switzerland.
