Gunma
prefectureskatakanapurplewhite
The flag of Gunma features a white mon emblem on a purple field. The emblem is a bold, angular crescent shape derived from the katakana character グ (gu), the first syllable of Gunma. The sweeping crescent evokes the mountains that surround this inland prefecture. The distinctive purple background is rare among Japanese prefectural flags and represents elegance and the prefecture's cultural heritage.
Gunma has more hot spring resorts than almost any other prefecture, including the famous Kusatsu Onsen, consistently ranked as Japan's top hot spring.
