The flag of Toyama features a white mon emblem on a dark blue field. The emblem is a stylised rendering of the katakana character ト (to), the first syllable of Toyama, designed with a pointed triangular shape that evokes the towering peaks of the Tateyama mountain range. The deep blue background represents Toyama Bay and the Sea of Japan.
Toyama Bay is famous for its firefly squid, which light up the sea surface with bioluminescent blue light every spring.
