Kiribati

Adopted in 1979 upon independence, the flag of Kiribati is derived from the coat of arms granted in 1937. The upper half shows a golden frigatebird flying over a rising sun against a red background, while the lower half features blue and white wavy lines representing the Pacific Ocean.
The frigatebird on the flag symbolizes command of the sea, freedom, and Kiribati's cultural dances that mimic the bird's movements.
