Adopted in 1962 at independence, the flag features a red background with a diagonal black stripe edged in white running from upper hoist to lower fly. Red represents the vitality of the people, black the dedication and strength, and white the sea and equality.
The flag was designed by a committee that included Carlisle Chang, one of Trinidad and Tobago's most celebrated visual artists.
