The flag of Sarawak is a tricolour of yellow, red, and black arranged as a diagonal cross dividing the flag into four triangles. A nine-pointed yellow star sits at the centre of the cross. The yellow represents the Supreme Head of State, red symbolises courage and sacrifice, and black represents the natural resources of Sarawak. The nine-pointed star represents the nine divisions of the state. Sarawak is the largest state in Malaysia by area and was once ruled as a personal kingdom by the Brooke family, known as the White Rajahs.

Sarawak was ruled by the Brooke family as the 'White Rajahs' from 1841 to 1946, making it one of the last independent kingdoms to be absorbed into a modern nation.
