The Benelux flag combines design elements from the flags of Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. It features a blue background with a stylised lion emblem, reflecting the heraldic traditions of all three member nations, each of which features a lion in its coat of arms.
The name Benelux is a portmanteau formed from the first syllables of Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg. The union was a precursor to the broader European Economic Community.
