Adopted in 1925, the flag is divided into four quarters: white with a blue star, red, white with a red star, and blue. The blue represents the Conservative Party, red the Liberal Party, and white the peace between them. The stars symbolize civic virtues.
The flag was designed by Manuel Amador Guerrero's son and was first sewn by MarÃa Ossa de Amador, who hid the flag in her clothing to protect it from Colombian authorities before independence.
