The flag of East New Britain Province features symbols reflecting the volcanic landscape and rich cultural traditions of the Tolai and other peoples of this island province. East New Britain is located on the island of New Britain and is dominated by active volcanoes. The provincial capital Rabaul was famously destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 1994, forcing the capital to move to Kokopo. The Tolai people are known for their shell money (tabu) currency system.
The 1994 eruption of Tavurvur and Vulcan volcanoes buried most of Rabaul under ash, but remarkably only five people died thanks to early warning systems.
