The flag of the Altai Republic features a sky-blue field with a broad white horizontal stripe through the center. Overlaid is a blue circle containing a golden griffin — the traditional Altai symbol drawn from Scythian-era petroglyphs found in the Pazyryk burial mounds. The blue represents the sky and Altai mountain lakes, white symbolizes the eternal snow-capped peaks, and the griffin connects to the ancient nomadic cultures that once roamed these mountains. The design reflects both the natural grandeur and deep archaeological heritage of the Altai Mountains.
The Altai Mountains are where Russia, China, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan nearly meet, and UNESCO declared them a World Heritage Site for their extraordinary biodiversity.
