Adopted in 1962 upon independence. The black represents the African people, the yellow symbolizes sunshine, and the red stands for brotherhood. The grey crowned crane in the center is the national bird and symbol of Uganda.
The grey crowned crane on Uganda's flag was chosen because it was the military badge of Ugandan soldiers during the British colonial period.
