Essex

The Essex flag features three Saxon seaxes (curved swords) on a red field. The seaxes are the ancient emblem of the East Saxon kingdom and have represented Essex for over a thousand years. The word 'Essex' itself derives from 'East Seaxe' (East Saxons).

The seax, a large single-edged knife, was the signature weapon of the Saxon people, and the county name Essex literally means 'territory of the East Saxons'.
