The Welsh flag, Y Ddraig Goch (The Red Dragon), features a red dragon passant on a green and white horizontal bicolour. The red dragon has been associated with Wales since at least the Historia Brittonum of around 829 AD. The green and white stripes represent the Tudor dynasty.
Despite being a constituent country of the UK, the Welsh dragon does not appear on the Union Jack because Wales had already been annexed by England when the flag was designed.
Adopted: 1959
