The UAE flag has a vertical red stripe on the hoist side and three horizontal stripes of green, white, and black. The Pan-Arab colors each have meaning: red represents hardiness, bravery, and the unity of the emirates, green symbolizes hope, joy, and fertility, white stands for peace and honesty, and black represents the strength of mind.
The UAE flag was designed by Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah, who was just 19 years old when his design won a national competition with over 1,000 entries.
Adopted: 1971
