The Austrian flag consists of three horizontal stripes of red, white, and red. Legend traces it to Duke Leopold V of Austria, whose white surcoat became soaked in blood during the Siege of Acre in 1191, leaving only a white band where his belt had been. It is one of the oldest national flags in the world.

The Austrian flag is one of the oldest in the world, with its red-white-red pattern dating back to at least 1230.
