The Belarusian flag features two horizontal stripes of red and green, with a traditional red-on-white ornamental pattern displayed vertically along the hoist side. The red symbolizes the blood shed in defense of the country, while the green represents the forests and fields. The decorative pattern is based on a traditional Belarusian textile design from 1917.

Belarus is the only European country whose current flag closely resembles its Soviet-era design, having readopted a modified version after a 1995 referendum.
