europetricolourvertical-stripes

The Irish tricolour features three vertical stripes of green, white, and orange. The green represents the Gaelic and Catholic tradition, the orange represents the Protestant tradition, and the white symbolizes the aspiration for peace between them. The flag was first flown during the Young Irelander Rebellion of 1848.

The Irish flag was inspired by the French Tricolore and was first presented to Irish nationalists by French women sympathetic to the Irish cause in 1848.
