europetricolourvertical-stripes
The Italian flag is a vertical tricolour of green, white, and red. Originally inspired by the French Tricolore, the green was substituted for blue. The colors may represent hope (green), faith (white), and charity (red), or alternatively the Italian landscape of green plains, snowy Alps, and blood of wars of independence.
Italy celebrates Flag Day (Festa del Tricolore) on January 7, commemorating the date in 1797 when the tricolour was first officially adopted.
Adopted: 1797
