Hokkaido

prefecturesstarbluered

The flag of Hokkaido features a red seven-pointed star on a dark blue field. The star symbolises the pioneering spirit of the island's settlers and represents the North Star, reflecting Hokkaido's position as Japan's northernmost major island. The deep blue evokes the surrounding seas and sky, while the red star conveys energy and determination. It is one of the few prefectural flags that breaks from the typical mon-style emblem format.

Hokkaido's flag design was chosen from over 15,000 public submissions, making it one of Japan's most democratically selected prefectural symbols.
