Iwate
prefectureskatakanagreenwhite
The flag of Iwate displays a white mon emblem on a deep green field. The emblem is a stylised rendering of the katakana character ใค (i), the first syllable of Iwate, composed of flowing brushstroke-like curves that evoke mountain peaks and soaring birds. The green background symbolises the prefecture's vast forests and pastoral landscapes in the Tohoku region.
Iwate is home to Chลซson-ji, a UNESCO World Heritage temple complex built during the golden age of the Northern Fujiwara clan in the 12th century.
