French Polynesia's flag features two red horizontal bands at the top and bottom with a wider white band in the centre. The territorial emblem shows a pirogue (double-hulled canoe) sailing on ocean waves beneath golden sun rays and a blue sky. Five stars represent the five archipelagos of French Polynesia.
French Polynesia encompasses 118 islands and atolls spread across an ocean area the size of Western Europe. The pirogue on the flag represents the incredible navigational skills of the Polynesian voyagers who settled these remote islands.
